With reference to my letter of the 18th of Ap-
ril last, I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne
to transmit to you, to be laid before Mr. Secretary
Lyttelton, a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's
Ambassador at St. Petersburg, forwarding a transla-
tion of a Note which His Excellency has received
from the Russian Government on the subject of Mr.
A.H. Rennie's claim for compensation in consequence
of the detention of the Steamships Calchas" and "Ara-
bia" at Vladivostok.
Lord Lansdowne would be glad to be favoured
with any observations which Mr. Lyttelton may de-
aire to offer on the Russian reply.
